The road most IMGs take: ECFMG certification, the Steps, US experience, and the Match. Six phases, each with its own checklist in your roadmap.
Decide and prepare
Typically 2 to 6 months
Before any exam, confirm you are eligible and understand what the road costs in time and money. Most regret comes from skipping this phase.

ECFMG certification
Typically 12 to 24 months
ECFMG certification is the gate to residency for international graduates: verified credentials, both USMLE Steps, and the clinical and communication requirement.

US clinical experience and network
Typically 3 to 12 months, often in parallel
Programs want proof you can work in a US clinical setting, and letters from US physicians carry the most weight. This phase runs alongside your exams.
- Observerships or externships.
- Letters of recommendation.
- CV and personal statement.
ERAS and the Match
One cycle: June to March
The Match is annual and unforgiving with dates. ERAS season opens in June, applications go to programs in late September, interviews run October to January, and Match Day is in March.

The visa
Typically 2 to 4 months after matching
A license or a match is not immigration status. The two common routes are J-1 sponsored by ECFMG and H-1B sponsored by the employer. Which one fits your life is a decision to make with an immigration attorney, not with a website.

Arrival, licensing and residency
The months around your July start
The last stretch is logistics: the state training permit your program requires, a social security number, housing and banking in a country where you have no credit history yet.
